We are absolutely delighted to start the New Year off by telling y'all that our dear friend, inimitable singer, bass player, and original Big Medicine member LaNelle Davis has officially rejoined the band.
We feel a surge of creative energy coming on for 2013, and we are very excited at the prospect of getting out and about more. We expect to be redlining the fun meter, so pass the word around...
This Saturday, June 2, we'll return to the stage of A Prairie Home Companion for a show which is aptly titled "Fever in the South". The show will be staged at a beautiful outdoor venue, the Koka Booth Ampitheatre in Cary, NC. And as a special treat, Jim Collier will be rejoining Big Medicine for this show.
We're so glad that Garrison Keillor likes our music!
See our calendar page for details.
One of the things that has always made Big Medicine such a fun band to be in is the infusion of classic, early Bluegrass sounds courtesy of Jim Collier. His guitar picking, singing, and mandolin playing are powerful additions to any band.
Jim has decided to devote more attention to his fantastic Bluegrass band, the Rye Mountain Boys, and pursue some of his other many interests and talents...
On May 7, Big Medicine will perform in Durham, NC as part of the wonderful Learned Place House Concerts series, the final show of the 2010-11 season. We are certainly looking forward to this special show, and we hope to see you there!
Last night: Big Medicine onstage with Branford Marsalis, Joey Calderazzo, Tina Morris Anderson, Scott Ainslie, Phil Wiggins, and a North Carolina Symphony string quartet! Among other performances, Branford sat in with us on Red Rocking Chair and Rough & Rowdy Ways, and various Big Med members in various combinations collaborated on other numbers as well. We are left with some amazing music ringing in our ears!

Flat out tore it up with Big Med and caller Phil Jameson at the Saturday night dance here in Lanesboro! Followed by a wonderful set of couples dances fiddled by Dwight Lamb, culminating in another square dance with hot and beautiful music by Rafe and Clelia Stefanini, joined by Jim and Joe as the Grey Eagles!
We're good and revved up about this weekend's whirlwind kickoff of our 2010 spring and summer season! First place we're headed for, on Friday the 12th, is Newark, Delaware, where we'll be performing for the Brandywine Friends of Old-Time Music - a magnificent group of long-standing supporters of the music. That's Friday night...Saturday we're turning back south to Upper Marlboro, Maryland, where we'll play a house concert at the home of our lovely friends Jamahl and Lynda...then on Sunday, back to good ol' Raleigh, NC for an afternoon concert sponsored by PineCone, at Daniels Auditorium, Museum of History.
Hope that you have a mighty fine rest of the week, and we're looking forward to seeing some of you at one of these events!
The devastation and scale of suffering in that Carribean nation is just overwhelming, and it can feel like there's so little that any one of us can do. Every little bit, every dollar of donation helps, though. Big Medicine would like to encourage you to help, and you can do so through many channels. One of the easiest is this:
Text “Haiti” to 90999, and a $10 donation will be charged to your phone bill. Please consider doing this if you haven't already!
Also...
Starting on Monday, January 25th and continuing for two weeks, CDBaby will donate $1 of from every CD sale, and $1 from every download sale over $8.99 via CDBaby, to the American Red Cross and to Mercy Corps, a Portland-based relief organization with a large presence in Haiti.
So, if you're thinking of buying our music (or any music, for that matter), please buy it this week or next from CDBaby!
After several years making do with an obsolescent website that limped along with chronically outdated content, we got in touch with the good folks at HostBaby and created this new website. With it, we'll be able to keep you much better informed as to Big Medicine's plans and doings, and you'll have far better idea of what's happening with the band, where we'll be playing, new projects, etc. Have a look around - there's music, info on the band, photos and videos to come, news items, links to buy CDs, and we'll also be starting up a blog, which will enable you to banter with us online. This new website will likely be an evolving project - we love it and hope that you do, too! and if you have any suggestions, come sign our guestbook and leave us a note.
